VCA Animal Hospitals, incorporated as VCA, Inc., operates more than 1000 animal hospitals in the US and Canada. The company is based in Los Angeles, and was founded in 1986. Until its acquisition by Mars in 2017, VCA traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker "WOOF". VCA was founded in 1986 by three health care company executives, Neil Tauber and brothers Robert (Bob) and Arthur (Art) Antin. VCA acquired its first veterinary clinic, West Los Angeles Veterinary Hospital, in 1987. In October 2004, VCA purchased Sound Technologies, a company which supplied digital radiology and ultrasound equipment to veterinary hospitals. In July 2009, VCA purchased diagnostic imaging company Eklin Medical Systems, which was combined with Sound Technologies to form Sound/Antech Imaging Services. In 2014, VCA acquired the dog day care center Camp Bow Wow, which had about 140 franchises in the US and one in Canada and licensed The Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa brand in Westlake Village, California from Beverly Hills Pet Hotels, Inc.

A very angry pet owner mentioned, "I got the VCA Care plan for 3 pets, received PCS orders but cannot cancel despite not being able to use the service. Still being charged. In Feb 2020, I enrolled 3 pets into the pet care plan. In June received PCS orders to be executed in August. I contacted VCA to inform them I would need to cancel or transfer services to the VCA hospital in the area I was PCSing to which is Silverdale, Washington. I was informed that cannot transfer services and that I could not cancel the service without paying a fee. I contacted VCA on June 19 and they stated I was not set to renew but I was paying back all of the services that I had used which end on the end of January of 2021."

"Worked there for a year and a half; maybe more. Work-life balance was terrible. If you say yes, maybe twice, to stay later, they expect it from you for the rest of the time you're there; and guilt you into saying yes. Anyone Supervisor or higher is in it for themselves. Once you stop thinking like them, and want a better work environment, they turn the problem around on you. Could work 50 hours a week, and still get in trouble for not doing everything you're told. When you try to catch up, you get yelled at for not helping. There are definite favorites, and I fell for them caring for others pretty easily. Can't trust anyone at VCA Dunmore Animal Hospital. Cons: No work-life balance, pressures you to do more than your worth"

"The review of the current employee from May is SPOT ON. I am a former employee and this is not a lifesaving hospital, its a clinic...if your pet needs lifesaving measures go elsewhere.....here they will recommend euthanasia and will be cold and unfeeling when they carry it out. High staff turn over, management makes frequent payroll "errors" assuming you don't look at your paystub, forced staff to sign a form that alleviates the overtime in many cases or you would lose hours.....if someone quits their pay is always shorted and it takes weeks to rectify. The staff is miserable under this management, which is very unprofessional and hostile. Staff get bullied and harassed over small errors, while doctors and management make HUGE, dangerous mistakes and those get ignored.......don't work here, you will just be right back on this site looking for another job. Cons: Management, inhumane treatment to some animals, abusive supervisors"

"Management at VCA Animal Specialty Group is absolutely terrible and corrupt. I would NEVER recommend someone working for them. They are extremely unfair and very biased when it comes to their employers. If you’re a “favorite”, then they’ll teach you and you’ll actually advance. If you’re not, then you get no training, and per the manager, they’re “not willing to let you learn” even though it’s supposed to be a teaching hospital. Cons: Short lunch for a 10 hour day, corrupt management, underpaid, wrongful termination"

"If i could rate them 0, i would. Toxic and hostile environment, Poor pay, Zero accountability for senior staff and upper management, Their idea of caring for their employees is ignoring them when they come to them with complaints, and instead of actually acting, they will tell you to "make a powerpoint". They are so busy, usually double booking or triple booking appointments, that they can not provide proper care to paitients that need it. Some of the senior staff members in treatment are horrible and verbally abuse their coworkers and some even abuse the animals in there care. The company management turns a blind eye to all this and will even go so far to protect their interests that they will fire someone for speaking out and defending themselves and others. One of the MDs is openly homophobic, Transphobic, and racist, and treats EVERYONE like garbage. The senior staff and MD are being protected from receiving any punishment by the hospitals management team. They pay very little and will work you to exhaustion and then punish you for the smallest mistakes. When you ask for a raise they will claim they don't have the funds (they average 2-5 BILLION dollars per year how do they not have the funds?) and if they do it will be a 10 cent raise. They purposefully inflate their services to line their pockets and retaliate against any who try to speak out on the terrible conduct that they allow across multiple hospitals in multiple states. IF I WERE YOU I WOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR PETS CARE AND EMPLOYMENT. THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE AND THEY DEFINITLY DON"T CARE ABOUT Cons: No respect, horrible management, abusive doctor, abusive senior staff, only care about profit, poor pay, understaffed, overworked and under appreciated employees"

"It’s a great place to get experience if you want to break into the field but they don’t care about their employees. They pay minimum wage with little to no room for growth. Cons: Management at this specific clinic is the absolute worst I have ever worked for."

"Very unsupportive management and a lot of backstabbing, gossip, and whining. Management was never around and only cared when backed into a corner. Also denied us from speaking to district management when they would come into visit by making us unavailable even when she stated we could talk to him. Doctors were also very verbally abusive. If you want to work in this field don’t work for VCA and support small business."

"Wages not keeping up with cost of living, managers don’t listen to employees, departments don’t work together, benefits awful (CE reimbursement not enough and vacation hrs earned per hrs worked are very low). Too hard to take vacation so people call out all the time and leave the rest of the hospital scrambling to take care of clients/patients."

"Worst place to work. Have worked in the field for over 15 years and by far this is one of the worst. Worked at the Chico VCA. Without going into detail, lots of ethically questionable things happened here. Sad to see people who are burnt out and the others that did not care about the families or pets. Will not go back to another VCA ever. Constantly changing people too."

"I worked at VCA full-time for more than a year Cons: The cons outweigh the pros by far. VCA is owned by MARS, inc. (yes, like the candy company); it makes about as much sense as it sounds. New PMs do not care about you as a person. VCA pays lip service to your mental health while they heap on the very stressors. If you have struggled, disability and improved performance don't count in your favor . Expect your workplace to run on a skeleton crew on a daily basis (before sick calls). No additional compensation or understanding for doing the work of two in 1 shift. You can work yourself to death one day and be fired the next. A PM can fire you and not tell you until days after the fact. The PM did not give me my final paycheck until 3 business days later (labor violation) They can speak ill of you to the EDD and cost you unemployment benefits."

"I worked at VCA full-time for more than a year Cons: *Low pay/inequality in pay scales- long process to get small raises *No bonuses *Very poor upper management- if you're lucky to get one of the few awesome hospital manager you might be ok. *Those with more responsibilities not valued- too focused on preventing bad reviews from bad lower level employees *Inability to easily removed team members that are creating toxic/negative environment- have to jump through hoops with HR to get anything done. *Lack of transparency- team members don't feel valued if they're kept in the dark. *Too much emphasis on wellness programs- required to sell packages which are not transferrable between VCAs if owner moves (big issue in Seattle) *Leads not adequately compensated for the responsibilities they take on. Too much asked for absolutely NO reward. *Ridiculous prices on certain things- price scale based on location but takes a while to get anything changed"

"I have been going to the same vet for over ten years. No announcement of the takeover by VCA was made. But all of a sudden the service took a dump. Last week I called because my dog had gotten a fox tail up his nose. I was told that soonest appointment was nearly three weeks away and that I should take my dog somewhere else. No recommendation of where I should take him, just basically not their problem do away. And gal on the phone was curt and snotty. Also, they have gotten VERY pushy about wanting you to have services done before that are due. I will be looking for a non-VCA practice to take my 4 pets to in the future."
